Three Preludes for Piano

Short, creative pieces for solo piano inspired by historic churches and old hymn tunes

Three Preludes for Piano

Three short, creative pieces for solo piano, each inspired by a historic church and incorporating a familiar hymn tune. They can be performed as a set or individually.

A lovely choice for a prelude or offertory in worship services throughout the year. They also work well as prelude music for weddings and funerals.

Hymn to Garrett Chapel

Ashley Danyew, piano

This prelude is inspired by a beautiful stone chapel tucked in amongst the trees on the shore of Keuka Lake in Western New York. Having visited the chapel during several summer trips, we were struck by the reverent building and its incredibly peaceful surroundings.

As Steve was improvising ideas and melodies for the piece, he played a motive reminiscent of the hymn, "Shall We Gather at the River." This seemed like an apt reference because of Garrett Chapel's site on the water, so you'll hear references to that hymn throughout.

Rockingham Meeting House

Ashley Danyew, piano

This prelude is inspired by an old meeting house in Southern Vermont where we were married. The Meeting House, nestled atop a hill in southern Vermont feels distinctly American, simple, and timeless, so we incorporated the wonderful Shaker tune, "Simple Gifts."

Bells in the Piazza

Ashley Danyew, piano

This prelude is inspired by Parrocchia San Martino, a two-toned salmon- and gold-colored church in Ispra, Italy, which we visited in 2018. The church is tucked into the middle of the piazza in this old Italian town on the coast of Lago Maggiore. As you hear the church bells ringing across the piazza each day, it's hard not to marvel at the beauty of the place and its surroundings. So, we thought incorporating the hymn, "For the Beauty of the Earth" would be fitting.
