12x12: 12 Pieces for 12 Bells

12 pieces for the church year for 3-octave handbells (*Reproducible* - $9.86 per book)

12x12

A printable collection of twelve pieces for the church year:
  • 4 solo pieces
  • 4 acclamations/processionals
  • 4 hymn descants
Written for just 12 bells, these pieces are easy to put together and accessible for smaller (and younger) groups of just six ringers.

Use them as preludes, acclamations or processionals, reflective prayer responses, or during communion. Performance notes are included for each piece.

The music is reproducible so you can make as many copies as you need for your ensemble.

A cost-effective option for small handbell choirs.

Buying handbell music can be expensive - sometimes as high as $5 per copy.

If you’re a part-time director of a small handbell choir at a small church with a small budget, to match, you may be able to afford only 1-2 new pieces a year.

A practical solution?
Handbell collections. Especially reproducible ones!

Instead of buying music one piece at a time (and spending $4-$5 per copy), a collection gives you several pieces for a fraction of the cost.

Let's do the math:
If you need 7 copies (6 ringers + you as the director), this 12x12 collection works out to be just $9.86 per book. That's about $0.82 per piece!

Titles

"Of the Father's Love Begotten" - 12 Bells + Solo Instrument (Cello or C Instrument)

This arrangement features the cello (or any C instrument), with handbells accompanying. The simple, scalar melody paired with the plaintive tolls of the bells matches the inner longing we feel during Advent as we wait for Christ’s return.

"Glorioso II" - 12 Bells

Inspired by the popular handbell acclamation, Glorioso (get your free copy here), this festive processional is based on a collection of repeated musical patterns. Each person is assigned two bells and one 2-measure pattern to play.

"Advent Processional" - 12 Bells

Like Glorioso II, this simple processional is based on a collection of repeated patterns. Each person is assigned two bells and one pattern to play. It’s written in such a way that it can be used as a stand-alone piece or as an introduction to the hymn, “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus” (HYFRYDOL).

"Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus" (Hymn Descant) - 12 Bells with Piano or Organ and Congregational Singing

Use this descant on one or both verses of the hymn, to add to the congregational singing experience. The descant matches the traditional harmony found in most hymnals.

"Still, Still, Still" - 12 Bells + opt. 4 Handchimes (six players)

This reflective arrangement of a beloved Christmas favorite is perfect for a candlelight Christmas Eve service.

The piece begins with a simple open fifth, gradually growing out of nothing using the singing bell technique. The singing bells underscore much of the arrangement, with the addition of handchimes partway through. The piece ends as simply and quietly as it began – with the singing bells fading away to nothing.

"Joy to the World" (Hymn Descant) - 12 Bells with Piano or Organ and Congregational Singing

Use this bright, festive descant on one or two verses of the carol, to add to the congregational singing experience. The descant matches the traditional harmony found in most hymnals.

"Light of Light" - 12 Bells

This bright, festive processional is a wonderful way to begin your Epiphany service (or any service focused on light). The piece is based on a series of repeated musical patterns. Each person is assigned two bells and one 2-measure pattern to play and repeat, as needed.

"We Three Kings" - 12 Bells

A reflective, creative setting of this traditional hymn for solo handbells - perfect for a prelude, anthem, or offertory.

"Christ Is the World's Light" (Hymn Descant) - 12 Bells

A soaring, lyrical descant to highlight the power of the beautiful hymn text. Use this descant on one or two verses of the hymn, to add to the congregational singing experience. The descant matches the traditional harmony found in most hymnals.

"Lenten Processional" - 12 Bells

The reflective nature of this piece works well during the season of Lent, and the piece can be easily played without music. Each player has a simple one measure pattern that is repeated. The piece could be rung standing in place or while processing.

"What Wondrous Love Is This" - 12 Bells + Solo Instrument

This simple, plaintive arrangement of “What Wondrous Love Is This” works well throughout the Lenten season and during Holy Week. A somber, reflective setting of the old hymn tune, WONDROUS LOVE, the piece is scored for 12 bells and a solo instrument. Includes a solo part transposed for the following instruments: violin, flute, oboe, clarinet in Bb, trumpet in Bb, alto saxophone, and tenor saxophone.

"Christ Is Alive" (Hymn Descant) - 12 Bells

A bright, sparkling descant to be used on one or two verses of the hymn, to add to the congregational singing experience. The descant matches the traditional harmony found in most hymnals (e.g. UMH, Glory to God).
